Mr Sand Ban

The recent hooha surrounding the export of sand from a neighbouring country had a direct impact on us. My dreams of becoming a towkay pasir took a little beating. Just when everything else was perfectly in place, an externality like that of the ban on sand exports to Singapore suddenly dashed one of my major projects. Yes we had to suffer losses, big deal, so what, this is business. But more importantly it dashed the livelihood of many islanders under our care. They had dreams.... well, they have their families to take care of, and gone with the wind is their ability to bring income to their families, for on that little island (just one of many exporting sand to Singapore), we were their hopes. Now the sand quarry lies abandoned. Our trucks, our excavators, our barge contracts, our buyers, our security guards that took care of the area, our village headman, our right hand man, our hardworking workers, no one was left out of this. We had a kenduri on that island before the project began, majority of the villagers attended, everyone was optimistic about their future. Now that we've had to abandon the project, all hopes are gone. I remember the chief worker saying that when he's saved enough, we can go to haj together, now he'll have to wait many more years. I pity him, I feel sad for the whole island. I really do, but there's nothing we can do. There are many more projects out there causing more damage to the environment than this. I shall not comment further. I miss the peace and quiet on that little island. Everything was so laidback, the sea breeze... life there moves at snail's pace as compared to hustle and bustle of the corporate world in Singapore. Well, life goes on...

I live alone Dear Allah, stay by my side In all my daily needs, be thou my guide... Grant me good health, for that indeed I pray To carry on my work from day to day... Keep pure my mind, my thoughts, my every deed Let me be kind, unselfish in my neighbour's need... Spare me from fire, from flood, malicious tongues, From thieves, from fear and evil ones... If sickness or an accident befall, Then humbly Allah, I pray, hear thou my call... And when I am feeling low, Or in despair, Lift up my heart and help me in my prayer... I live alone, Dear Allah, yet have no fear, Because I feel your presence ever near...

Today's Quote

I've wed not whom I can live with. I did whom I can't live without.
